Television service in the Slovak Republic (independent since the 1 January, 1993 after the split of Czechoslovakia) is operated by the national broadcaster Slovak Television (Slovenska Televizia)

Television broadcasting covering the territory of Slovakia was launched in 1956 and was, carried out by the corporation called Czechoslovak Television in Slovakia. In 1962 the regional studio Kosice in Eastern Slovakia started broadcasting, and in 1966 the regional studio Banska Bystrica in central Slovakia was set up.

In 1991 the Act on Slovak Television as a public institution was adopted by the Slovak Parliament (National Council of Slovakia). For its activities the Slovak Television is responsible to the Council of Slovak Television whose members are nominated by the Parliament. The General Director is elected and called off by the Parliament upon a proposal by the Council.

In 1992 the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting was set up by the parliament as the supreme body having the authority to issue a broadcasting licence. Licences for covering the entire territory of the Slovak Republic must be approved, upon a proposal from the council, by the Parliament.

In 1993 the Act on Radio and Television Broadcasting was adopted defining the rights and responsibilities of operators, advertisement time allotment, rules of licence proceedings and cable distribution system.

In February 1995 the Council has issued a licence to a commercial broadcaster (Markiza Slovankia) for broadcasting on the third channel. New commercial cable operators started broadcasting in 1995.

STV has three studios - Bratislava, Banska Bystrica and Kosice. The headquarters of the STV are in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

STV is broadcasting on two channels - STV 1 and STV 2. The total amount of programme broadcast in 1994 was 7,814 hours on both channels.
