Television service in the Slovak Republic (independent since the
1 January, 1993 after the split of Czechoslovakia) is operated by
the national broadcaster Slovak Television (Slovenska Televizia)
Television broadcasting covering the territory of Slovakia was
launched in 1956 and was, carried out by the corporation called
Czechoslovak Television in Slovakia. In 1962 the regional studio
Kosice in Eastern Slovakia started broadcasting, and in 1966 the
regional studio Banska Bystrica in central Slovakia was set up.
In 1991 the Act on Slovak Television as a public institution was
adopted by the Slovak Parliament (National Council of Slovakia).
For its activities the Slovak Television is responsible to the Council
of Slovak Television whose members are nominated by the Parliament.
The General Director is elected and called off by the Parliament
upon a proposal by the Council.
In 1992 the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting was set
up by the parliament as the supreme body having the authority to
issue a broadcasting licence. Licences for covering the entire territory
of the Slovak Republic must be approved, upon a proposal from the
council, by the Parliament.
In 1993 the Act on Radio and Television Broadcasting was adopted
defining the rights and responsibilities of operators, advertisement
time allotment, rules of licence proceedings and cable distribution
system.
In February 1995 the Council has issued a licence to a commercial
broadcaster (Markiza Slovankia) for broadcasting on the third channel.
New commercial cable operators started broadcasting in 1995.
STV has three studios - Bratislava, Banska Bystrica and Kosice.
The headquarters of the STV are in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.
STV is broadcasting on two channels - STV 1 and STV 2. The total
amount of programme broadcast in 1994 was 7,814 hours on both channels.

The studio covers the region of Eastern Slovakia, the town Kosice
with 230,000 inhabitants and jointly the town Presov (40 km from
Kosice). The total number of inhabitants covered by the regional
studio is more than 1.6 million. The local area is mixed - industrial
and agricultural.
The station transmits 460 hours of programmes per year. Every day
the news and sports items are included in the main news programme
of STV, while the reports on cultural activities are quite famous.
Regional programmes for the area are broadcast on regular basis.
The studio has technology and equipment for making entertainment
programmes as well as dubbing of foreign programmes. It also broadcasts
programme for minorities (Ukrainian and German).

Produces 150 hours of programmes yearly with 60 employees. Apart
from the news and sports material provided daily for the STV main
news programmes, the studio broadcasts twice a week (Tuesday and
Friday on STV 2 at 6 p.m.) its own regional magazine "Region
Central Slovakia" covering the latest events in the region.
Current affairs and documentaries - the most popular is the magazine
on tourism "Teleweekend". The programme, which originated
in this regional studio as part of the regional broadcasting, later
aroused interest of other studios and became a series broadcast
regularly in the national network on a regular basis with a fixed
place in the schedule.
"Year In The Country" - a new current affairs series
about living in the country.
"Dialogues On Addiction" - a new series, with open discussions
about the increasing number of drug addicts.
"Encyclopaedia Of The History Of Slovak Villages" - a
series of documentaries on the history of famous small towns.
The studio produces documentaries on folk art, folk customs still
preserved in the region of Central Slovakia.
Foreign programmes - there are dubbing studios in Banska Bystrica
producing about 50 hours of dubbed feature films and documentaries.
