The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) is the largest national broadcasting company in Norway and operates both television, web and radio services - national and regional. It is financed solely by licence fee.
Other television services are TV2 - the third national channel - commercial but with a public service obligation, other commercial but cable-based companies (TV Norge and TV3) and finally several commercial local television companies. All this in addition to what can be received via satellite.
Norway has approximately 4,5 million inhabitants and 1,5 million homes have TV sets. NRK provides a comprehensive service with two TV channels: NRK1, NRK2, Radio 1, 2 and 3, digital channels and regional radio and television. NRK TV sends on average 115 hours per week with a little more than half the total output being home production. About 35% of its own production is made by the regional offices.
Some 74% of the Norwegian population watch TV every day. 64% of these are watching NRK. In addition to NRK's national TV services we have 10 regional television transmissions. The basis for NRK's regional activity is the 13 regional offices - including the Sami, or Lapp - Radio. These stations produce radio and television programmes both for regional and national distribution. The regions have since 1998 been part of the largest division at NRK, the District- and News Division.
The division is based on multimedial co-operation and includes national and regional radio and television news, sport and current affairs in addition to regional production for radio and television in general
Radio and television are under the same leadership at the regional offices and an important aim is to profit the most from several medias.Multii-medial work is encouraged as is multi-skilling. The news desks cooperate closely,  and the idea is to minimise the barriers between the different work categories.
The duration of the regional television transmissions is 23 minutes every day Monday to Friday. Out of the 3,000 permanently employed by NRK, about 900 work in the regions and about 700 produce regional radio,  television and Web-sites. Three of the regions have extensive television facilities and production studios varying from two to four hundred square meters. These stations are able to produce nearly all kinds of programmes except drama.

The Sami Radio is a department on its own in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. Due to this fact both the radio and the television divisions of Sami Radio are independent in determining the editorial content of the programmes that are made. Like NRK, we too are financed by licence fee.
The staff of the television division of Sami Radio consists of some 10 people, in charge of the editorial and technical part of the programme, which is transmitted on NRK national television network. Our policy is to protect and develop the Saami language. Therefore, all programmes are made mainly in this language and are then sub-titled into Norwegian.
The programmes we make can be divided into two categories: those that can be viewed on a regular basis, known as the Saami programmes, and those we make for other departments. The regular Saami programmes are: a 15 minute children's television every other week and a 30 minute documentary, feature and debate once a month, with a break during the summer for both. We also make programmes that are not made on a regular basis as mentioned above, but are still considered as independent Saami programmes not being placed under any titles. These are mainly documentaries either from the Saami or other indigenous people's cultural life.
The programmes made for other departments are mainly news reports in Saami, short features for both the youth and adults in programmes made by the regional departments in NRK and environmental documentaries. The subjects we are dealing with in our programmes and reports are issues concerning the Saami and other indigenous people.
