In Hungary regular TV broadcasts have been going on since 1957. The Hungarian TV covers its costs by money alloceted by the Parliament of the Republic of Hungary, from viewers fees and advertising activities. The activities of the Hungarian Television are regulated by the Media Act of 1996.

The Hungarian TV is a public service TV broadcasting two programmes on a nation-wide level. The broadcasting time is a total of 12097 minutes, from which TV1 covers 7458 minutes and the TV2 4639 minutes. The broadcasting language is Hungarian, all films are dubbed, and sub-titles shows are minimal. Hungarian TV uses Beta SP for raw material.

Monday to Thursday broadcasts are for programmes for the ethnic minorities in Hungary, each group has 30 minutes. Their programmes are subtitled in Hungarian for the Hungarian audience.
There are 6 regional studios in the Hungarian Television framework:

MTV Budapest Regional Studio
MTV Pécs Regional Studio
MTV Szeged Regional Studio
MTV Sopron Regional Studio
MTV Debrecen Regional Studio
MTV Miskolc Regional Studio

These broadcast local programmes and at the same time they also offer a regional news programme, for times a day. They also produce a regional magazine and air it on Friday from one o clock.

As a result of a particular situation, where sizeable group of Hungarians live abroad, the Directorate for Regional and Minority Programmes offers a mixture of programmes of Hungarian TV studios for the neighbouring countries (i.e. Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Romania, the Ukraine, Slovakie).

Quite apart from the Hungarian TV there is a satellite based studio working in the country called Duna TV which will primarily provide the Hungarian population of the neighbouring countries with independent programme. There is no regulation governing the relationship between MTV and Duna TV.

In Hungary there are two nation-wide commercial channels which started their work in the autumn of 1997. There is also a fairly extensive cable TV network as well as a wide range of local (town based) TV stations.
