The Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) is the public broadcaster of Cyprus. Its acronym in Greek is RIK. As a non-profit public service organization, it dedicates its resources to achieving its mission to inform, to entertain and to promote culture.
CyBC’s two television channels transmit daily on a 24-hour basis, covering the whole of the island. Its programming is carried by satellite to Cypriots living overseas.
CyBC’s four radio channels are transmitted on FM. Only its first and third channels are also transmitted on AM.
TV
RIKONE puts emphasis on news and current affairs, as well as on educational and cultural programmes, in addition to quality entertainment, including series and other local productions.
RIKTWO is the entertainment, sports and cultural channel. It offers viewers an additional choice, featuring local productions, programmes in Turkish aimed at the Turkish Cypriot Community, international series, high quality feature films, international made-for-TV movie, sports, music and children’s programmes. It also transmits news in Turkish and English. Since 1993 it also carries the Euronews programme (15 hours per week).
RIKSAT
For CyBC, the provision of reliable, prompt and objective information to the public via news bulletins and current affairs programmes is not restricted to the geographical boundaries of Cyprus, but – through its satellite programme – extends to countries hosting Cypriot communities such as Greece, the UK and the rest of Europe, the Middle East, North and South Africa, Asia, North America and Australia.
CyBC’s Satellite Programme, RIKSAT, also transmits television productions, current affairs programmes, documentaries, cultural, children’s and entertainment programmes produced by CyBC. The only exception is the live transmission of the Sunday Mass and other religious programmes from MEGA TV.
Current affairs programmes are retransmitted on a daily basis so as to serve the overseas Cypriots in the UK and other countries who, due to the time difference, cannot watch them live.
Following an agreement with Greek National Television’s ERT Satellite Programme, the 6.00 p.m. news bulletin and weekly programmes “Cyprus, 7 Days” and “Cyprus Review”, are transmitted by ERTSAT all over the world.
The four Radio Programmes of CyBC
The four Radio Channels (First, Second, Third and Fourth) transmit quality programmes and provide information, culture and entertainment to the public, taking into consideration the needs and preferences of all communities in Cyprus, by transmitting their programmes in various languages.
